Apple TV+’s latest sci-fi series with some incredibly high-tech themes, Sunny, has reached Episode 5, which is also the mid-point of the series. So far, this series starring Rashida Jones has had plenty of intriguing twists and turns, with a whole lot of robot action, some chaos, and a splendid performance from Jones who plays the role of Suzie.
As Suzie navigates life without her husband and son, she makes new discoveries about her husband, Masa, who wasn’t the man she thought he was. In the previous episodes, Sunny learns about the Yakuza, and Episode 5 is yet another page of the same chapter! So keep reading to find out our review of the same.
Does Sunny Find Out the Truth About Masa?
Sunny Episode 5 begins with a flashback, this time giving the viewers a glimpse into Sunny and Masa’s married life, which wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows, shockingly enough.
It was a short but strong scene, one where Masa missed his son’s play because he was late from work, the reason being “a big cleanup,” and he was also drunk. More than a flashback for the purpose of the story, it appears to be a memory Sunny was thinking of as she travels away from her home, which was previously broken into.
After the unfortunate incident in the previous episode, Sunny, Suzie, and Mixxy leave the city and travel to Mixxy’s family home in hopes of running away from the Yakuza.
If there’s one thing we know for sure is that Mixxy and Sunny are far from getting along with each other. Suzie continues seeing flashbacks of Masa and seems angrier than ever, but her dark sense of humor stays intact, which helps enhance the quality of the series overall.
More than half of Sunny Episode 5 takes place in the woods as the trio tries to locate Mixxy’s home, so seems more than sure that they aren’t lost until she admits they are.
Until the previous episode, we weren’t too doubtful about Mixxy, but this episode has us siding with Sunny, and that’s an interesting turn of events. The series makes it a point to work off of Suzie’s internal anguish from time to time, which does come pouring out ever so often.
In addition, the tensions between Mixxy and Sunny only continue to get worse as the episode moves forward, and once again, you will most likely find yourself siding with a robot.
They are eventually forced to spend a night when they find shelter, but it only turns into more chaos as the night goes by, especially after it is confirmed once again that Mixxy is trying her best to ruin any bond that was formed between Sunny and Mixxy so far.
Sunny Episode 5 doesn’t do much when it comes to the actual plot of the series, or at least in terms of helping it move forward. But it does help the viewers understand more about Suzie, and more importantly, her relationship with Masa, which was starting to go sour in some ways right before he disappeared, along with their son.
The episode ends on a rather ominous note when Suzie wakes up after finally having spent a day at Mixxy’s farmhouse and Sunny is nowhere to be found.
While there are hints of Yakuza being present at the scene, our suspicions point towards Mixxy instead. Overall, this was an interesting episode, but certainly less intense compared to the previous ones.
Conclusion
The more you watch Sunny, the more you realize that maybe this series isn’t about high-tech, but instead about complex human relationships. Nevertheless, make sure you stick around to find our take on the next episode, next week!
