Indonesian director, Edwin, has created some unique and critically acclaimed movies in his career so far, including Postcards from the Zoo, Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly, Someone’s Wife in the Boat of Someone’s Husband, and Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash. When you take a look at these long titles, his latest movie on Netflix, Bordless Fog, appears a little pale.
However, don’t the tile of Edwin’s new movie fool you, because what’s in a name? Yes, that is originally a quote by William Shakespeare, but it fits here too, and we’re going to explore why in this review of Borderless Fog, which will help you decide whether you want to stream it or skip it.
Putri Marino Delivers an Exceptional Performance
Borderless Fog starts at the Indonesia-Malaysia border, and yes, that kind of helps understand the title of the movie, but of course, there’s plenty more to come, so you might want to buckle in.
At first glance, this movie appears to have dark and chilling themes (Yes, we are talking about the head that simply rolls off the dead body), the kind which might make some flinch, but appeal to others, and enough to make us want to stick around.

The main character of the Indonesian movie, Inspector Sanja, doesn’t have the grandest entry, but as it turns out, she doesn’t need one. Her presence, dialogues, and comebacks to men and their not-so-witty but sexist remarks are more than enough to cement the fact that she will shoulder the responsibility of Borderless Fog, and we certainly weren’t complaining.
Sanja is bought in when there is a mysterious and brutal murder along the Indonesia-Malaysia border, but during the investigation, Sanja is forced to confront the ghosts of her past, the several ties with her family, all of which serve as little subplots across the movie which is just under 2 hours.

The investigation and Sanja’s role are the crux of Borderless Fog and the driving force that made us stay till the end of the movie because, without these two elements, it wouldn’t make much sense.
But despite a very strong premise, something about the movie just felt incomplete. We believed it was often too character-driven, because of which, somewhere along the way, it lost its purpose.
Despite that, because of the overall grim and dark nature of Borderless Fog, this movie will be a success for some and a failure for others, but one thing is for sure, this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Albeit, plenty of credit must go where it’s due, which is to Putri Marino, who plays the role of Sanja.

Conclusion
Borderless Fog is a mysterious crime thriller that delves deep into a murder with its roots sprouting from all over the place. But, the performances in the movie make Edwin’s latest worth a watch, especially if you favor the genre it falls under.
