Cowboy Cartel Review: Rookie FBI Agent Carries Apple TV+ Series

Cowboy Cartel is Apple TV+’s latest docuseries in a sea of splendid fictional series that takes up the majority of the streaming platform. There’s no denying that when it comes to documentaries and docuseries, Netflix knows how to get the job done, but in recent times, Apple TV+ has also churned out some interesting docuseries like Hollywood Con Queen and Omnivore.

Now, it is time for Cowboy Cartel, a 4-part docuseries on the unraveling of a Mexican cartel, to take center stage. Narratives revolving around drug cartels are usually a hit, and it has been interesting to watch Cowboy Cartel unfold.

However, did it live up to its intriguing premise? Keep reading to find out!

Horses, cocaine, money laundering, and a rookie FBI agent are some of the key elements present in Cowboy Cartel, and those which carry the docuseries for four episodes.

The first episode introduces the viewers to José Treviño, who is a former member of Los Zetas, the Mexican cartel that is the crux of Cowboy Cartel.

The introduction is definitely engaging and one that urges you to stick around if you want to find out more about one of the deadliest cartels in Mexico, and anyone who actually likes the subject, is more likely to stick around. However, at first glance, this docuseries didn’t appear to be everyone’s cup of tea.

Treviño was under plenty of spotlight when he enjoyed plenty of success in horse racing, despite being a newcomer, and it was the kind of success that happened overnight that sent alarm bells ringing.

Now, one doesn’t have to know much about horse racing to be able to follow Cowboy Cartel, but it certainly helps from time to time.

Apart from Treviño, the second and most important person in the docuseries was the rookie FBI agent who has been mentioned in articles, trailers, and anytime there’s mention of Los Zetas, and yes, we are talking about Scott Lawson, who found himself posted in Laredo, Texas.

He was a small fish in a big pond, with not-so-good Spanish and low expectations of what case he might be put on.

It is the unlikeness of the situation that often makes it feel like Cowboy Cartel would have worked wonders as a fictional series that took inspiration from Lawson’s story, but that doesn’t take away from the docuseries which has now been released on Apple TV+.

There are some highs and lows when it comes to the overall quality, but what works in favor of the docuseries is the presence of Lawson himself.

Conclusion

As we mentioned earlier, Cowboy Cartel might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s something about this docuseries that makes you want to stick around until the finish line, but it isn’t the ruthless Los Zetas, but instead Scott Lawson.
