Homicide: Los Angeles Review: Rivetting Netflix Series Takes Things Up a Notch!

Homicide: Los Angeles has now landed on Netflix, with all episodes available to stream. The first season of this true crime docuseries was released earlier in 2024, and it didn’t take long before the platform announced a second season, this time taking place in Los Angeles and the gruesome reality behind the glitz and glam of Hollywood.

The series, Homicide: Los Angeles has 5 episodes, each more gripping than the other, and these have been helmed by none other than Dick Wolf, who is also the mastermind behind Law & Order, which first started in 1990.

Wolf has a dedicated fan following who will surely tune into his latest series, and by the end of this review, you will be able to decide whether you want to stream Homicide: Los Angeles or skip it.

An Absolute Nail-Biter!

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and their work is mentioned at the very beginning of Homicide: Los Angeles, and how they investigate some of the most gruesome murders in the very popular city.

This note is enough to establish what the viewers can expect from the coming episodes, and prepare themselves for the worst, which translates to the best when it comes to true crime fans, because the more gruesome it is, the better.

Homicide: Los Angeles does exactly what it promises to do, as the first episode, “Hunting Phil Spector,” is the key to making this series a successful binge. It is often important to have a strong first episode, and Dick Wolf’s latest true crime series does exactly that.

Since this series is set in Los Angeles, it made sense for it to begin with a popular celebrity case. While plenty have heard of Phil Spector’s case from the early 2000s, Homicide: Los Angeles does a deep dive unlike never before.

Spector’s episode had set the bar fairly high for the remaining four episodes, but it’s safe to say that none of the episodes this season disappointed. The interviews from homicide detectives particularly stood out as one of the more interesting parts of the series as they helped us understand aspects of the case that were never even heard of, to begin with.

Formula 1 has helped increase everyone’s love for race cars all across the globe, but Homicide: Los Angeles episode 2 went a different route with “Race Car Killer.” Although this wasn’t the best episode of the latest season, it helped maintain the quality of the series with a gripping narrative.

As for the best episode, we’d personally have to pick episode 3, “Murder at the Beach,” which sounds like a great murder mystery book you can’t put down, and that’s exactly how watching it felt.

With the wide range of interviews, Homicide: Los Angeles was really able to tap into the emotional side of people, whilst also keeping them on the edge of their seats, biting their nails, because there is something to look forward to at every point in this series.

Admittedly, we do believe that this latest season took things up a notch when compared to Homicide: New York, and succeeded in keeping us hooked.
