Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa Review: A Story of True Strength and Hard Work

Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa is Netflix’s latest documentary that tells the story of the first Nepali woman to summit and descend Mount Everest, and has done it ten times. She is also a working mum and determined to turn her dreams into reality.

This documentary lands at a time when climbing Mount Everest has become an incredibly popular activity for people, and is often treated as a sport. There’s plenty of discourse about the subject online, and plenty of it is shocking and negative.

However, Netflix focuses on Lhakpa Sherpa instead, the embodiment of resilience and strength, and it’s worth a watch.

A Tale of Strength Shouldered by One Woman

If you are having a lazy day and need motivation to get out of bed and do something meaningful with your life, then turn on Netflix and watch Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, because if this doesn’t make you want to leave your bed do something exceptional, we don’t know what will.

The documentary starts and at the very beginning we see Lhakpa climb Everest as she reaches the point which is called “The Death Zone.” Just by looking at it, one can conclude that there isn’t much oxygen, it is incredibly cold, and this isn’t something just anyone can accomplish. The possibility of death quite literally is knocking on the door, but Lhakpa isn’t one to give up.

Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa isn’t just about Lhakpa and her hard work, but the reason she works this hard – her daughters. With two daughters and their bright futures ahead, Lhakpa must do whatever it takes to secure that future for her family, who are her heart and soul, and the reason she is ready to take risks, time and again.

The documentary focuses on Lhakpa’s previous expeditions, with glimpses of the same through footage as it builds a narrative of exactly what her life looks like. This includes mundane day-to-day tasks, spending time with her family, and doing the things she loves the most.

The interviews of Lhakpa are the highlight of this documentary because who better to tell the mountain queen’s story than the mountain queen herself?

Some of the moments in Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa are intense enough to take your breath away, especially when we witness Lhakpa and her team climbing some of the most difficult parts of the summit, a place where very few people have stepped foot.

Despite the element of fear that is often occurring in this documentary, the sights are truly beautiful to look at.

Altogether, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa is one of Netflix‘s more different documentaries as it steers away from the usual mysteries and serial killers, and shows the life of a brave woman.
