Sunny Episode 4 Review: Matters Get Extremely Complex in Apple TV+’s Drama Series

Sunny, starring Rashida Jones, has now reached the mid-point of the series and matters are about to get a lot more intense, and episode 4 is proof of that. This episode focuses primarily on the Yakuza, and how dangerous they are, and prompts their possible connection to Masa as Suzie continues to look for answers.

Admittedly, this wasn’t the episode of the series so far, but once again, Jones’ performance was splendid and served as a saving grace for the episode. In this review, we will explore a little deeper into Sunny episode 4, so make sure you stick around, and beware of spoilers.

Does Suzie Get Any Answers?

Much like the previous episodes of Sunny, episode 4 also begins on a rather confusing note, giving us yet another glimpse into Masa’s life when he was still around. It is now clear that Masa worked either for or with the suspicious blonde woman from episode 3, and there’s plenty more that will hopefully be unraveled in this episode.

After the opening credits, we are back at Masa’s funeral, where Suzie is confused, trying her best to look for answers, but her mother-in-law is right there, ready to make matters worse for her. Lucky for Suzie, her new friend Mixxy is around to distract but also help Suzie figure out answers about Masa, his father, what he did, and plenty more.

Admittedly, there are more questions than answers at this point of the series, but we have decided to give Sunny the benefit of the doubt!

This particular episode also shows just how different Sunny the robot is from other robots. Although she is unable to steal alcohol for Suzie, she can lie for her. There’s plenty of uniqueness when it comes to Sunny as a series, but as the episodes progress, Sunny appears to be trying a little too hard to set itself apart from other high-tech shows and movies and gets extremely complex after a certain point.

It almost loses its charm and quality, but because there’s a level of curiosity, you will find yourself tempted to stick around.

We learn a little more about the blonde woman’s purpose, her connection to the Yakuza, and her father who has tasked her to find the “manual.” The Yakuza is a fairly important part of the episode, and as it appears, Suzie will stop at nothing to find out more about Masa, even if that means sitting in a dark sauna despite her claustrophobia.

Meanwhile, Sunny makes her to Masa’s mother’s house, offering to help after the funeral, but instead gets her a drink or two, hoping to get some answers. Sunny and Suzie are both on a mission in episode 4!

After Suzie, Sunny, and Mixxy return home, they realize that the Yakuza had broken into Suzie’s home, destroyed it, and definitely stolen some things. This prompts Suzie’s breakdown, where the episode comes to an end.

Once again, there are more questions than answers, but the Yakuza have made themselves known in this episode, and now it’s time for Suzie to find out more about them, as well as Masa’s real father.

Conclusion

Sunny episode 4 wasn’t as gripping as the previous episodes, but it had a handful of redeeming qualities. Nevertheless, do keep a lookout for our review of future episodes!
