However, one question is probably on everyone’s mind – is Trap based on a true story? Keep reading to find out more!

Inspiration Behind Trap

Trap is the story of a man who accompanies his daughter to one of the biggest concerts in the city, only to realize that they are at the center of something sinister, and are essentially trapped.

The trailer of the movie, before the release, also revealed that it is the father who is a serial killer, which raises the question about the inspiration behind this movie.

According to M. Night Shyamalan, Trap is loosely inspired by Operation Flagship which was planned by the U.S. Marshals Service and executed on December 15, 1985, in Washington, D.C. The keyword here remains “loosely.”

Operation Flagship was a sting operation of sorts that arrested over 100 fugitives after they were lured in with the expectation of winning NFL tickets to a game between the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders) and Cincinnati Bengals.

It was reported by BBC, that Shyamalan thought this operation was “totally absurdist.” He also added, “It was something that was in my head a lot when it happened,” which brings us to Trap, where the serial killer found himself amid the police force in an event meant for concertgoers!
